What is an AV fistula?
An AV fistula (AVF) is a surgical connection made between an artery and a vein, usually in your arm. It gives your dialysis machine a strong, reliable point to draw blood from and return it to, once it has matured.
Why do I need one before I start dialysis?
An AV fistula needs time to mature, so it works best when it is made 4 to 6 months before dialysis begins. Planning early avoids relying on a temporary catheter.
Where on my body will the fistula be?
Usually near the wrist or forearm (a radiocephalic fistula) or near the elbow or upper arm (a brachiocephalic fistula), depending on your veins and arteries.
What if I need dialysis before a fistula is ready?
Your nephrologist can insert a temporary catheter in a vein in the neck or groin so dialysis can start straight away, while your fistula matures for later use.
Who refers me to Anga AVF Centre?
Most patients are referred by their nephrologist.
